A New Year, begins at different times of the year depending on culture worldwide. For example, many Asian countries celebrated the year of the Chinese Wood Dragon on 10 February 2024, bringing good fortune and prosperity, while providing the energy to overcome any obstacles encountered. Islamic countries bring in the New Year in July, on the 1st of Muharam according to the Hijri calendar. Whenever the year started for you, WCET® promises to continue to work diligently on your behalf throughout 2024. The WCET® Executive Board (EB), supporters and volunteers have gone above and beyond, giving their time and effort to fulfill WCET®’s mission, often changing obstacles into opportunities.
Dr Kathleen L Capitulo, as a new incoming EB member, will be leaving the Constitutional Advisory Panel and Miss Vesna Konjevoda, from Croatia, has joined this important panel. We deeply appreciate Dr Capitulo’s work and thank her for her service. We are also grateful that she has agreed to support Miss Konjevoda during her orientation to this Panel, which is crucial for its continued success.
In striving to continue the WCET®’s mission we carry on extending our relationships with other related organisations. A congress Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed with the Brazilian Association of Enterostomal Therapy (SOBEST®). We thank Dr Sonia Dantas, as SOBEST® President, and their EB for their collaboration in moving this forward.
Throughout the past year we have represented the WCET® in so many countries, virtually or face to face. Many thanks to all organisations for their kind invitations to participate and for giving us the opportunity to speak and promote our beloved WCET®. And 2024 will likely be just as busy, full of events and opportunities. We will keep you up to date via our bullETin reports and messages. Do not hesitate to share your stories in the bullETin and submit your manuscripts to the journal. Do not forget that our journal is the only one to be professionally translated into four languages other than English; we send our thanks for the financial support of Industry (Coloplast China for the Chinese translation and Calmoseptine® for the Portuguese and Spanish versions). We are still looking for a sponsor for the French translation as professional translation is very costly.
With regard to the 3rd edition of the WCET® International Ostomy Guideline, the first step has been to identify who we would like to be part of the core development team and how we will involve others to be active in panel or small working groups to inform the intial content and review of this edition. Under the guidance of Dr Emily Haesler as methodologist, integral clinical questions have been identified and the scoring methodology to be used has been discussed. We are thrilled to announce that both patients and surgeons will be involved in developing this edition, which will provide the opportunity to include literature that we may not be aware of and to ensure we look at salient issues from all angles; both peers’ and patients’ perspectives.1,2
Many thanks to all of you who have renewed your membership, with the membership year ending on 31 December 2023. For those of you who are not sure when your membership ends, you can check it out in your online profile after having logged into the website3 If you have any issue getting access and/or doing online payments, do not hesitate to contact our Central Office (admin@wcetn.org). Remember, members receive benefits including reduced Congress registration fees and possible scholarships if criteria are met.
As you may know, WCET®’s next Biennial Congress will be a joint event with the Association of Stoma Care Nurses United Kingdom (ASCN UK). It will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 28 September to 1 October. Registration is now open, do not miss this event which promises to be outstanding. Abstract and travel scholarship submissions are now closed. Applicants will be notified in May of decisions by the Scientific Committee regarding abstracts, and by the Norma N Gill Foundation® Committee regarding scholarships. Many thanks to all for your submissions, we cannot wait to see you there and hear about your scientific and clinical endeavours.
The Scientific and Organising Committees have been working hard for several months in preparing the best programme possible. Almost all keynote speakers from the cancelled event in 2020 have agreed to attend and replacements have been found for others. We have agreed that the ASCN UK will chair stoma and fistula sessions, while WCET® will chair others. Workshops will be available based on each of our tri-specialty fields.
We are excited to announce that two new WCET® Life members will be honoured, on stage at the Congress gala dinner. Also, three WCET® President Awards will be given to individuals who have made significant contributions within their specialised fields; for spreading knowledge and innovation to benefit the lives of individuals in need of stoma, wound and/or continence care. The three awardees come from three continents, representing the WCET®’s global community of ET nurses in all its diversity. Of course, the ASCN UK will also honour their prestigious members with the ‘Best Nurse’ and ‘Best Writer’ of the year award.
Additionally, scholarship recipients and new WCET® ETNET/REP directors will be acknowledged on stage. Please continue to follow updates relating to Congress 2024 on our website.4
To all WCET® International Delegates (IDs), please note you will need to prepare and submit your biennial country report by 20 June 2024. It is important to meet this deadline5 to adhere to constitutional requirements, stating that reports must be posted on the WCET® website 90 days prior to our General Business Meeting (GBM), which will be held during Congress in September.
This organisation relies on you, we cannot wait to celebrate our tri-specialty and your achievements, so stay tuned and keep watching for deadlines, as time flies.

O Ano Novo começa em alturas diferentes do ano, consoante as culturas de todo o mundo. Por exemplo, muitos países asiáticos celebraram o ano do Dragão de Madeira chinês a 10 de fevereiro de 2024, o qual traz boa sorte e prosperidade, enquanto fornece a energia necessária para ultrapassar quaisquer obstáculos encontrados. Os países islâmicos celebram o Ano Novo em julho, no dia 1 de Muharam, de acordo com o calendário Hijri. Sempre que o ano se iniciou para si, a WCET® promete, ao longo de 2024, continuar a trabalhar diligentemente em seu nome. A Comissão Executiva (CE) da WCET®, os apoiantes e os voluntários foram mais além, dando o seu tempo e esforço para cumprir a missão da WCET®, transformando frequentemente obstáculos em oportunidades.
A Dra. Kathleen L. Capitulo, como novo membro da Comissão Executiva, vai deixar o Painel Consultivo Constitucional e a Sra. Vesna Konjevoda, da Croácia, juntou-se a este importante painel. Apreciamos profundamente o trabalho da Dra. Capitulo e agradecemos-lhe os seus serviços. Estamos igualmente gratos por ter concordado em apoiar a Sra. Ao esforçarmo-nos por continuar a missão da WCET®, continuamos a alargar as nossas relações com outras organizações relacionadas. Ao longo do ano passado, representámos a WCET® em muitos países, virtualmente ou presencialmente. Muito obrigado a todas as organizações pelos seus amáveis convites para participar e por nos darem a oportunidade de falar e de promover a nossa querida WCET®. E 2024 será provavelmente igualmente movimentado, cheio de eventos e de oportunidades. Manter-vos-emos informados através dos nossos relatórios e mensagens no bullETin. Não hesite em partilhar as suas histórias no bullETin e em enviar os seus manuscritos para a revista. Não se esqueça que a nossa revista é a única a ser traduzida profissionalmente em quatro línguas, para além do inglês; agradecemos o apoio financeiro da indústria (Coloplast China para a tradução chinesa e Calmoseptine® para as versões portuguesa e espanhola). Ainda estamos à procura de um patrocinador para a tradução francesa, uma vez que a tradução profissional é muito dispendiosa.
No que diz respeito à 3ª edição das Directrizes Internacionais para Ostomia da WCET®, o primeiro passo foi o de identificar quem gostaríamos que fizesse parte da equipa de desenvolvimento principal e como iremos envolver outras pessoas para participarem ativamente em painéis ou em pequenos grupos de trabalho para informar o conteúdo inicial e a revisão desta edição. Sob a orientação da Dra. Emily Haesler como metodologista, foram identificadas questões clínicas integrais e discutida a metodologia de pontuação a utilizar. É com grande entusiasmo que anunciamos que tanto os doentes como os cirurgiões estarão envolvidos no desenvolvimento desta edição, o que irá proporcionar a oportunidade de incluir literatura que poderá não ser do nosso conhecimento, garantindo que analisamos questões importantes de todos os ângulos; tanto a perspetiva dos pares como a dos doentes.1,2

Como deve saber, o próximo Congresso Bienal da WCET® será um evento conjunto com a Association of Stoma Care Nurses United Kingdom (ASCN UK). Realizar-se-á em Glasgow, na Escócia, de 28 de setembro a 1 de outubro. As inscrições já estão abertas, não perca este evento que promete vir a ser excecional. As submissões de resumos e de bolsas de viagem estão encerradas. Em maio os candidatos serão notificados das decisões do Comité Científico relativamente aos resumos e do Comité da Norma N Gill Foundation® relativamente às bolsas de estudo. Muito obrigado a todos pelas vossas submissões, mal podemos esperar para vos ver e ouvir relativamente aos vossos esforços científicos e clínicos.
Os Comités Científico e Organizador têm trabalhado arduamente durante vários meses de forma a preparar o melhor programa possível. Quase todos os oradores principais do evento cancelado em 2020 concordaram em participar e para os restantes foram encontrados substitutos. Acordámos que a ASCN UK presidirá às sessões sobre estomas e fístulas, enquanto a WCET® presidirá às restantes. Estarão disponíveis workshops baseados em cada uma das nossas três especialidades.
Temos o prazer de anunciar que dois novos membros vitalícios da WCET® serão homenageados no palco do jantar de gala do Congresso. Além disso, serão atribuídos três prémios WCET® President Awards a indivíduos que tenham dado contributos significativos nas suas áreas de especialização, por difundirem conhecimento e inovação em benefício das vidas de indivíduos que necessitam de cuidados com estomas, feridas e/ou continência. Os três galardoados provêm de três continentes, representando em toda a sua diversidade a comunidade global de enfermeiros de ET da WCET®. Naturalmente, a ASCN UK também irá homenagear os seus prestigiados membros com os prémios "Melhor Enfermeiro" e "Melhor Escritor" do ano.
Além disso, os bolseiros e os novos directores da WCET® ETNET/REP serão reconhecidos em palco. Continue a acompanhar as actualizações relativas ao Congresso 2024 na nossa página Web.4
A todos os Delegados Internacionais (DIs) da WCET®, chamamos a atenção para o facto de terem de preparar e apresentar o vosso relatório bienal por país até 20 de junho de 2024. É importante cumprir este prazo5 de forma a respeitar os requisitos constitucionais, que estipulam que os relatórios devem ser publicados na página Web da WCET® 90 dias antes da nossa Reunião Geral de Negócios (GBM), a qual terá lugar durante o Congresso em setembro.
Esta organização depende de si, mal podemos esperar para celebrar a nossa tri-especialidade e as suas realizações, por isso, fique atento e não deixe passar os prazos, pois o tempo voa.
