Congratulations to Kimberly LeBlanc PhD RN NSWOC WOCC(C) FCAN for winning the Gold Award for ‘Innovation in Skin Integrity’. This award recognises those “whose research or practice has helped reduce the incidence of enhanced knowledge of skin integrity such as skin tears”.

Dr LeBlanc is a global leader in advancing the field of skin integrity among aging populations. Her passion in skin tears and wound management is indisputable. She was a co-founder and first president of the International Skin Tear Advisory Panel (ISTAP). Kimberly was the driving force behind the panel which has accomplished many ground-breaking initiatives under her leadership including the development, multi-language translation and validation of a skin tear classification system. Her vision from the onset was to raise the global awareness of skin tears, encourage research and to establish an international panel to ensure that skin tears remain on the world stage.

WCET® is thankful that Dr LeBlanc also finds time to serve as the International Delegate (ID) from Canada.

Congratulations also to Prof Ayise Karadağ, who is the Dean of Koc University School of Nursing, Istanbul, Turkey, for winning the Silver Award for “Contribution to Education in Wound Care’.

Prof Karadağ received her PhD in Fundamentals of Nursing from Hacettepe University in 1999. In 2003 she completed the WOC Nursing Training Program at Cleveland Clinic’s RB Turnbull Jr School of ET/WOCN Program. She paved the way for the foundations of Wound Ostomy Nursing in Turkey.

Following her establishment of the first stoma-therapy unit in 2000 at Gazi University Hospital in Ankara, Turkey, she initiated the WOC Nursing Certified Training Program in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Health in 2001. WOCN Certified Training Program has been carried out by Koç University Semahat Arsel Nursing Education and Research Center (SANERC) since 2018 in cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Health in accordance with global education standards under the leadership of Prof. Karadağ. Prof. Karadağ also conducts short-term Wound Care Courses under SANERC for healthcare professionals.

WCET® was priviledged that Ayise also served as the Turkish International Delegate (ID) of World between 2001 and 2018.

And thirdly, congratulations to Idevania Costa RN NSWOC PhD for winning the Silver Award for ‘Outstanding Achievements in Patient Care’. This award recognises “those who have made an outstanding contribution to any area of wound care putting patient at the centre of their work”.

Dr Costa is the founder and CEO of Advanced-Virtual Wound Care Consultation and Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at Lakehead University, Canada. She received this award in recognition of the significant contributions she has been making to improve wound care in clinical, education and research settings in both Brazil and Canada. 

In Brazil, she established wound care clinics that remain functioning and to which she continues contributing her unique clinical expertise. In Canada she has launched a virtual wound care consultation process to facilitate timely access to Certified Wound Care Nurses from anywhere and decrease the impact of COVID-19 pandemic demands on wounds outcomes. 

Dr Costa has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and lectured nationally and internationally to raise awareness to achieve better outcomes in chronic wound care by emphasising the role individuals with chronic wound plays when actively engaged in every day self-management.

Two recently appointed WCET® Journal Editorial Board members, Dr Emily Haesler and Professor Karen Ousey, also featured in the awards. The International Guideline Governance Group, of which Dr Haesler is Editor-in-Chief and Methodologist, won the Gold Award for ‘Advances in Pressure Care’. Karen Ousey, professor of Skin Integrity at the University of Huddersfield, received the Bronze Award for ‘Contribution to Education in Wound Care’.

Dr Harikrishna KR Nair, who was the Keynote Speaker at the WCET® Congress in 2018, and Dr Idevania Geraldina Costa, whose article ‘Challenge in practice - venous leg ulcer management: A case study demonstrating the role of the wound care nurse in a developing country’ was recently published in the WCET® Journal, also won awards.

And two assocations that WCET® are affiliated with, the Brazilian Association of Enterostomal Therapy, SOBEST and the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), USA, also won awards. Congratulations to these two groups.

 

Wound Ostomy Continence Forum supports high-quality professional learning in Asia

On 30 January the 5th Wound Ostomy Continence Forum (WOCF) was held in Beijing. The event was held virtually and attracted more than 5,000 healthcare professionals across Asia – a new record for WOCF. The half-day forum featured insightful presentations and discussions from leading clinicians from around the world.

Laurent Chabal (Switzerland), President-Elect of WCET®, introduced and elaborated on the second edition of the International Ostomy Guideline (IOG 2020). 

Dr David Keast (Canada), Medical Director, chronic wound treatment clinic, Parkwood Institute, shared the recently published international consensus on managing the gap between the wound bed and the wound dressing to promote healing in chronic wounds – the first international consensus in the field. 

Dr Helmut Madersbacher (Austria), International Neuro-Urology Society President, gave a detailed presentation on intermittent catheterization for neurogenic bladder emptying – an advanced bladder management technique in Europe. 

A panel discussion on ‘Ostomy, wound and continence care under COVID-19 was held with panelists sharing their experience and flexibility on how to better address patients’ care needs amid the pandemic.

The panel comprised Weng (Julie) Yajuan, Chairperson of WCET® Education Committee; Laurent Chabal, President-Elect of WCET®; David Keast, Medical Director of chronic wound treatment clinic, Parkwood Institute; Xu Honglian, Vice President of Wound Ostomy Continence Committee, China Nursing Association; Wu Ling, Vice President of Wound Ostomy Continence Committee, China Nursing Association; Zheng Meichun, Vice President of Stoma Nursing Committee, Guangdong Nursing Association; and Wang Yuanjiao, Vice President of Rehabilitation Nursing Committee of China Nursing Association.

The forum was sponsored by Coloplast China.

Greg Dixon, owner of Calmoseptine Inc, explained that although the ointment was developed 70 years ago as a diaper (nappy) rash ointment, it has now been proven to be an excellent multi- purpose moisture barrier ointment, used by patients and healthcare professionals for many skin conditions of both adults and children.

Le Dr LeBlanc est un expert mondial dans le domaine de l’intégrité de la peau chez les populations vieillissantes. Sa passion pour les déchirures cutanées et le traitement des plaies est indiscutable. Elle a été cofondatrice et première présidente de l’International Skin Tear Advisory Panel (ISTAP). Kimberly a été la force motrice du groupe, qui a concrétisé de nombreuses initiatives innovantes sous sa direction, notamment le développement, la traduction multilingue et la validation d’un système de classification des déchirures cutanées. Dès le départ, son projet était de sensibiliser le monde aux déchirures cutanées, d’encourager la recherche et de rassembler un groupe international pour garantir que les déchirures cutanées restent sur le devant de la scène mondiale.

WCET® remercie le Dr LeBlanc de trouver également le temps de s’impliquer en tant que délégué international (DI) du Canada.

La professeure Karadağ a obtenu son doctorat en principes fondamentaux des soins infirmiers à l’Université Hacettepe en 1999. En 2003, elle a suivi le programme de formation d’infirmière en soins intensifs à la Cleveland Clinic’s RB Turnbull Jr School of ET/WOCN Program. Elle a posé les premières fondations des soins infirmiers pour plaies et stomies en Turquie.

Après avoir mis en place la première unité de stomathérapie en 2000 à l’hôpital universitaire Gazi d’Ankara, en Turquie, elle a lancé le programme de formation certifiée WOC des infirmières en stomathérapie en coopération avec le ministère turc de la santé en 2001. Le programme de formation certifié WOCN a été réalisé par le Centre d’éducation et de recherche en soins infirmiers Semahat Arsel de l’Université Koç (SANERC) depuis 2018 en coopération avec le ministère turc de la Santé, conformément aux normes de formation mondiales, sous la direction du professeur Karadağ. Le professeur Karadağ dirige également des stages de formation aux soins des plaies dans le cadre de SANERC pour les professionnels de santé.

WCET® a eu le privilège qu’Ayise ait également été la déléguée internationale (DI) turque du monde entre 2001 et 2018.

Et enfin, félicitations à Idevania Costa RN NSWOC PhD pour avoir remporté la médaille d’argent pour “réalisations exceptionnelles en matière de soins aux patients”. Ce prix récompense “ceux qui ont apporté une contribution exceptionnelle à tout domaine du traitement des plaies en plaçant le patient au centre de leur travail”.

Le Dr Costa est le fondateur et le PDG d’Advanced-Virtual Wound Care Consultation et professeur adjoint à l’école d’infirmières de l’université Lakehead, au Canada. Elle a reçu ce prix en reconnaissance des importantes contributions qu’elle a apportées à l’amélioration du traitement des plaies dans des contextes cliniques, éducatifs et de recherche, tant au Brésil qu’au Canada. 

Au Brésil, elle a créé des cliniques de traitement des plaies qui fonctionnent toujours et auxquelles elle continue d’apporter son expertise clinique unique. Au Canada, elle a lancé un processus de consultation virtuelle en matière de soins des plaies afin de faciliter l’accès rapide à à des infirmières certifiées en soins des plaies, où qu’elles soient, et de réduire l’impact des demandes liées à la pandémie de COVID-19 sur les résultats des plaies. 

Le Dr Costa a publié plusieurs articles dans des revues évaluées par des pairs et a donné des conférences au niveau national et international pour sensibiliser à l’obtention de meilleurs résultats dans le traitement des plaies chroniques en soulignant le rôle que jouent les personnes souffrant de plaies chroniques lorsqu’elles s’engagent activement dans l’autogestion quotidienne.

Deux membres du comité de rédaction du WCET® Journal récemment nommés, le Dr Emily Haesler et le professeur Karen Ousey, ont également été récompensés. L’International Guideline Governance Group, dont le Dr Haesler est le rédacteur en chef et le méthodologiste, a remporté la médaille d’or pour “Advances in Pressure Care”. Karen Ousey, professeur d’intégrité cutanée à l’université d’Huddersfield, a reçu la médaille de bronze pour sa “contribution à la formation au traitement des plaies”.

Deux associations auxquelles WCET® est affilié, l’Association brésilienne de thérapie entérostomique (SOBEST) et le National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP), aux États-Unis, ont également été récompensées. Félicitations à ces deux groupes.

Le forum wound ostomy continence soutient la formation professionnelle de grande qualité

Le 30 janvier, le 5e Forum Wound Ostomy Continence (WOCF) s’est tenu à Pékin. L’événement s’est déroulé virtuellement et a attiré plus de 5 000 professionnels de santé dans toute l’Asie - un nouveau record pour le WOCF. Ce forum d’une demi-journée a donné lieu à des présentations et à des discussions perspicaces avec d’éminents cliniciens du monde entier.

Laurent Chabal (Suisse), président élu de la WCET®, a présenté et développé la deuxième édition de la Directive internationale sur les stomies (IOG 2020). 

Le Dr David Keast (Canada), directeur médical de la clinique de traitement des plaies chroniques du Parkwood Institute, a présenté le consensus international récemment publié sur la gestion de l’espace entre le lit de la plaie et le pansement pour favoriser la guérison des plaies chroniques - le premier consensus international dans ce domaine. 

Le Dr Helmut Madersbacher (Autriche), président de la Société internationale de neuro-urologie, a fait une présentation détaillée sur le cathétérisme intermittent pour la vidange neurogène de la vessie - une technique avancée de prise en charge de la vessie en Europe.

Une table ronde sur les soins des stomies, des plaies et de la continence dans le cadre du COVID-19 a été organisée. Les participants ont partagé leur expérience et leur flexibilité sur la manière de mieux répondre aux besoins des patients dans le contexte de la pandémie.

Le groupe était composé de Weng (Julie) Yajuan, présidente du comité d’éducation WCET®; Laurent Chabal, président élu de WCET®; David Keast, directeur médical de la clinique de traitement des plaies chroniques, Parkwood Institute; Xu Honglian, vice-président du comité des plaies, stomies et continence de l’association chinoise des infirmiers; Wu Ling, vice-président du comité des plaies, stomies et continence de l’association chinoise des infirmiers; Zheng Meichun, vice-président du Comité des soins de stomie, Association des infirmiers de Guangdong; et Wang Yuanjiao, vice-président du Comité des soins de réadaptation de l’Association des infirmiers de Chine.

Greg Dixon, propriétaire de Calmoseptine Inc, a expliqué que, bien que la pommade ait été mise au point il y a 70 ans comme pommade pour l’érythème fessier, il a maintenant été prouvé qu’elle était une excellente pommade barrière contre l’humidité à usage multiple, utilisée par les patients et les professionnels de santé pour de nombreuses affections cutanées chez les adultes et les enfants.
