Colorectal and WOC knowledge share: a truly collaborative event
After a year of planning, some WCET® Executive Board (EB) members were delighted to be invited to join the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) for their 31st conference in the beautiful city of Istanbul. This event marked the auspicious occasion of the very first joint nursing conference, along with local organisers the Turkish Wound Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Society for Nurses, the European Council of Enterostomal Therapists (ECET) and the WCET®.
Dr Elizabeth A Ayello was invited as honorary nursing conference president and Dr Ayişe Karadağ held the position of president. Renata Batas and Danila Maculotti represented ECET EB while Laurent Chabal and Denise Hibbert represented WCET® EB.
WCET® Past President Susan Stelton also gave presentations at both the ISUCRS and WOC conferences. In advance of the conference, Dr Ayello was hosted by the Koç University and met with professors and post-graduate students.
After two wonderful days of workshops, keynote and plenary sessions, panel discussions, meet the experts, free papers and poster presentations, came the closing session for nursing. Dr Karadağ and the EB of the Turkish WOC Association presented Dr Elizabeth A Ayello with a Lifetime Achievements Award; Dr Dimitri Beeckman with an Award for Service to Skin Care and Susan Stelton, for her contribution to the development of WOC in Turkey. Also, Laurent Chabal, for the WCET®, and Gabriele Kroboth, for the ECET, were presented with awards.

Invitation to speak at KOC university
Dean Ayise Karadag from the School of Nursing, Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey invited me to give a Writing for Publication Seminar to the doctoral students and faculty on Tuesday 24 October 2022, prior to the 31st Biennial ISUCRS Joint Nursing Congress. Most of our WCET® members would know me as I served as the volunteer Executive Editor for the WCET® Journal from 2004-2014. As a clinical nurse specialist with a full-time job in a major hospital in New York, I began working part-time as an assistant to the editor for the journal Decubitus in 1989. As the name of the journal changed so did my position. The journal is now called Advances in Skin and Wound Care and I have the honor to serve as Co-editor in Chief along with Dr R Gary Sibbald, a dermatologist from Toronto, Canada.
This practical seminar had two parts. The first was a didactic presentation entitled ‘Writing and Publication Tips’. The objectives of this first part of the seminar were: 1. To identify editorial process steps from manuscript conception, writing, publication submission and journal publication decision; and 2. Review common requirements of manuscript author guidelines to write in the appropriate journal style. Participants were able to attend in person or virtually; the feedback I received was they enjoyed the relaxed and interactive format that enabled them to learn and gain new knowledge about publishing.
Of the major points covered, the major first decision is who do you want to read your article? That will then guide you to which journal you should think about tailoring the style and format of your manuscript to. It is essential to follow the author guidelines for the specific journal you will be submitting your manuscript to.
We had much discussion about how to write and some of the difficulties that writing in English can pose. I loved hearing all the comments and questions; we also talked about their ideas for their doctoral dissertation. The School of Nursing students and faculty at Koc University are very actively engaged in many studies for which they are to be commended. More importantly, they do submit their research for publication to a variety of journals.
The second part of the seminar was open only to in-person attendees. The Dean preselected some manuscripts for me to review and use as illustrations of the principles that were covered in part one. I emphasised that a student cannot just take a paper, thesis, or even their doctoral dissertation and submit it to a journal as written for the school. Writing for a journal is different. Several examples of clarity of thought, sentence structure, as well as how to respond to peer reviewer comments were discussed.
Afterwards, I toured the simulation labs and reviewed some tapes of the competency assessment exams that students are required to do. Their labs and competency checklist/processes were very impressive.
Based on my interactions with students, staff and faculty, this is a very extraordinary School of Nursing. This is a School of Nursing that mentors its students and faculty and greatly supports these professional efforts of creating the evidence upon which to base practice as well as disseminating the findings.
On a personal note, I wish to thank them all - students, staff and faculty - who took the time out of their busy work and school schedules, for their kindness and the wonderful way they took care of me. I look forward to learning of their publications, research and doctoral dissertation. Thank you so very much for this great opportunity which was so professionally enriching and fun for me. Partage des connaissances sur la médecine colorectale et les soins des plaies, stomies et continence: un événement véritablement collaboratif
Après une année d’organisation, des membres du Conseil d’administration (CA) du WCET® ont été ravis d'être invités à rejoindre la Société internationale universitaire des chirurgiens colorectaux (ISUCRS) pour leur 31e conférence dans la belle ville d'Istanbul. Cet événement a marqué le début de la toute première conférence conjointe sur les soins infirmiers, avec les organisateurs locaux, la société turque des infirmières en soins des plaies, stomies et continence (WOC), le Conseil européen des thérapeutes entérostomiques (CEET) et le WCET®.
Le Dr Elizabeth A Ayello a été invitée en tant que présidente honoraire de la conférence sur les soins infirmiers tandis que le Dr Ayişe Karadağ assurait la fonction de présidente. Renata Batas et Danila Maculotti représentaient le CA du CEET tandis que Laurent Chabal et Denise Hibbert représentaient le CA du WCET®.
Susan Stelton, ancienne présidente du WCET®, a également présenté plusieurs travaux lors des conférences de l'ISUCRS et de la société turque. Avant la conférence, le Dr Ayello a été accueilli par l'université de Koç et a rencontré des professeurs et des étudiants de troisième cycle.
Après deux fantastiques jours d'ateliers, de discours liminaires et de séances plénières, de débats d'experts, de rencontres avec des experts, de communications libres et de présentations d’affiches, est venue la séance de clôture pour les soins infirmiers. Le Dr Karadağ et le CA de l'Association turque des stomathérapeutes ont remis au Dr Elizabeth A. Ayello un prix pour l'ensemble de sa carrière, au Dr Dimitri Beeckman un prix pour les services rendus aux soins de la peau et à Susan Stelton, pour sa contribution au développement des soins WOC en Turquie. Par ailleurs, Laurent Chabal, pour le WCET®, et Gabriele Kroboth, pour le CEET, ont été récompensés.

Invitation pour une présentation à l’université KOÇ
La doyenne Ayise Karadag de l'école d'infirmières de l'université Koç à Istanbul, en Turquie, m'a invitée à présenter un séminaire sur l'écriture pour la publication aux étudiants en doctorat et au corps enseignant le mardi 24 octobre 2022, avant le 31e congrès bisannuel conjoint de l'ISUCRS et de l’association infirmière. La plupart de nos membres WCET® me connaissent car j'ai été directrice de la publication bénévole du WCET® Journal de 2004 à 2014. En tant qu'infirmière clinicienne spécialisée ayant un emploi à plein temps dans un grand hôpital de New York, j'ai commencé à travailler à temps partiel comme assistante de rédaction pour la revue Decubitus en 1989. Le nom de la revue a changé, tout comme ma position. La revue s'appelle désormais Advances in Skin and Wound Care soins avancés de la peau et des plaies) et j'ai l'honneur d'en être la co-rédactrice en chef avec le Dr R Gary Sibbald, un dermatologue de Toronto, Canada.
Ce séminaire pratique comportait deux parties. La première était une présentation didactique intitulée "Conseils de rédaction et de publication". Les objectifs de cette première partie du séminaire étaient les suivants: 1. Identifier les étapes du processus éditorial depuis la conception du manuscrit, sa rédaction, la candidature à la publication et la décision de publication de la revue; et 2. Passer en revue les exigences courantes des directives à l'intention des auteurs de manuscrits pour rédiger dans le style approprié à la revue. Les participants ont pu y assister en présentiel ou virtuellement; les commentaires que j'ai reçus indiquent qu'ils ont apprécié le format détendu et interactif qui leur a permis d'apprendre et d'acquérir de nouvelles connaissances sur la publication.
Parmi les principaux points abordés, la première décision à prendre est la suivante: qui voulez-vous voir lire votre article ? Cela vous permettra de savoir à quelle revue vous devez penser à adapter le style et le format de votre manuscrit. Il est essentiel de suivre les directives à l’intention des auteurs pour la revue spécifique à laquelle vous soumettrez votre manuscrit.
Nous avons beaucoup discuté de la façon d'écrire et de certaines des difficultés que peut poser l'écriture en anglais. J'ai adoré entendre tous les commentaires et les questions; nous avons également parlé de leurs idées pour leur thèse de doctorat. Les étudiants et le corps enseignant de l'école d'infirmières de l'université Koc sont très activement engagés dans de nombreuses études, ce dont il faut les féliciter. Plus important encore, ils soumettent leurs recherches pour publication à diverses revues.
La deuxième partie du séminaire n'était ouverte qu'aux participants en présentiel. La doyenne a présélectionné quelques manuscrits pour que je les examine et les utilise comme illustrations des principes abordés dans la première partie. J'ai insisté sur le fait qu'un étudiant ne peut pas simplement prendre un article, une thèse ou même sa thèse de doctorat et le soumettre à une revue comme il a été écrit pour l'école. Écrire pour une revue est différent. Plusieurs exemples de clarté de pensée, de structures de phrase, ainsi que la façon de répondre aux commentaires des pairs examinateurs ont été discutés.
Ensuite, j'ai visité les laboratoires de simulation et visionné quelques cassettes des examens d'évaluation des compétences que les étudiants doivent passer. Leurs laboratoires et leurs checklistes/processus d'évaluation des compétences étaient très impressionnants.
D'après mes interactions avec les étudiants, le personnel et le corps enseignant, il s'agit d'une école d'infirmières tout à fait extraordinaire. Il s'agit d'une école d'infirmières qui pratique le tutorat pour ses étudiants et qui soutient grandement leurs efforts professionnels visant à créer des données probantes sur lesquelles fonder la pratique et à diffuser les résultats.
D'un point de vue personnel, je tiens à les remercier tous - étudiants, personnel et professeurs - qui ont pris le temps d'empiéter sur leur planning chargé, pour leur gentillesse et la façon merveilleuse dont ils ont pris soin de moi. J'ai hâte de découvrir leurs publications, leurs recherches et leur thèse de doctorat. Merci beaucoup pour cette grande opportunité qui a été si enrichissante professionnellement et si agréable pour moi. J'ai hâte d'entendre parler de vos réalisations.
