Colorectal and WOC knowledge share: a truly collaborative event
After a year of planning, some WCET® Executive Board (EB) members were delighted to be invited to join the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ISUCRS) for their 31st conference in the beautiful city of Istanbul. This event marked the auspicious occasion of the very first joint nursing conference, along with local organisers the Turkish Wound Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Society for Nurses, the European Council of Enterostomal Therapists (ECET) and the WCET®.
Dr Elizabeth A Ayello was invited as honorary nursing conference president and Dr Ayişe Karadağ held the position of president. Renata Batas and Danila Maculotti represented ECET EB while Laurent Chabal and Denise Hibbert represented WCET® EB.
WCET® Past President Susan Stelton also gave presentations at both the ISUCRS and WOC conferences. In advance of the conference, Dr Ayello was hosted by the Koç University and met with professors and post-graduate students.
After two wonderful days of workshops, keynote and plenary sessions, panel discussions, meet the experts, free papers and poster presentations, came the closing session for nursing. Dr Karadağ and the EB of the Turkish WOC Association presented Dr Elizabeth A Ayello with a Lifetime Achievements Award; Dr Dimitri Beeckman with an Award for Service to Skin Care and Susan Stelton, for her contribution to the development of WOC in Turkey. Also, Laurent Chabal, for the WCET®, and Gabriele Kroboth, for the ECET, were presented with awards.

Invitation to speak at KOC university
Dean Ayise Karadag from the School of Nursing, Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey invited me to give a Writing for Publication Seminar to the doctoral students and faculty on Tuesday 24 October 2022, prior to the 31st Biennial ISUCRS Joint Nursing Congress. Most of our WCET® members would know me as I served as the volunteer Executive Editor for the WCET® Journal from 2004-2014. As a clinical nurse specialist with a full-time job in a major hospital in New York, I began working part-time as an assistant to the editor for the journal Decubitus in 1989. As the name of the journal changed so did my position. The journal is now called Advances in Skin and Wound Care and I have the honor to serve as Co-editor in Chief along with Dr R Gary Sibbald, a dermatologist from Toronto, Canada.
This practical seminar had two parts. The first was a didactic presentation entitled ‘Writing and Publication Tips’. The objectives of this first part of the seminar were: 1. To identify editorial process steps from manuscript conception, writing, publication submission and journal publication decision; and 2. Review common requirements of manuscript author guidelines to write in the appropriate journal style. Participants were able to attend in person or virtually; the feedback I received was they enjoyed the relaxed and interactive format that enabled them to learn and gain new knowledge about publishing.
Of the major points covered, the major first decision is who do you want to read your article? That will then guide you to which journal you should think about tailoring the style and format of your manuscript to. It is essential to follow the author guidelines for the specific journal you will be submitting your manuscript to.
We had much discussion about how to write and some of the difficulties that writing in English can pose. I loved hearing all the comments and questions; we also talked about their ideas for their doctoral dissertation. The School of Nursing students and faculty at Koc University are very actively engaged in many studies for which they are to be commended. More importantly, they do submit their research for publication to a variety of journals.
The second part of the seminar was open only to in-person attendees. The Dean preselected some manuscripts for me to review and use as illustrations of the principles that were covered in part one. I emphasised that a student cannot just take a paper, thesis, or even their doctoral dissertation and submit it to a journal as written for the school. Writing for a journal is different. Several examples of clarity of thought, sentence structure, as well as how to respond to peer reviewer comments were discussed.
Afterwards, I toured the simulation labs and reviewed some tapes of the competency assessment exams that students are required to do. Their labs and competency checklist/processes were very impressive.
Based on my interactions with students, staff and faculty, this is a very extraordinary School of Nursing. This is a School of Nursing that mentors its students and faculty and greatly supports these professional efforts of creating the evidence upon which to base practice as well as disseminating the findings.
On a personal note, I wish to thank them all - students, staff and faculty - who took the time out of their busy work and school schedules, for their kindness and the wonderful way they took care of me. I look forward to learning of their publications, research and doctoral dissertation. Thank you so very much for this great opportunity which was so professionally enriching and fun for me. I look forward to hearing about your accomplishments. Hoping to see you again at Congress - submit your abstracts please.

Tras un año de planificación, algunos miembros del Comité Ejecutivo (EB) del WCET® estuvieron encantados de ser invitados a unirse a la Sociedad Internacional de Cirujanos Universitarios de Colon y Recto (ISUCRS) para su 31ª conferencia en la hermosa ciudad de Estambul. Este acontecimiento marcó la ocasión propicia de la primera conferencia conjunta de enfermería, junto con los organizadores locales, la Sociedad Turca de Enfermería de Heridas, Ostomía y Continencia (WOC), el Consejo Europeo de Terapeutas Enterostomales (ECET) y el WCET®.
La Dra. Elizabeth A Ayello fue invitada como presidenta honoraria de la conferencia de enfermería y el Dr. Ayişe Karadağ ocupó el cargo de presidente. Renata Batas y Danila Maculotti representaron a ECET EB, mientras que Laurent Chabal y Denise Hibbert representaron a WCET® EB.
Susan Stelton, ex Presidenta de WCET®, también presentó ponencias en las conferencias de ISUCRS y WOC. Antes de la conferencia, el Dr. Ayello fue recibido por la Universidad Koç y se reunió con profesores y estudiantes de posgrado.
Tras dos maravillosos días de talleres, sesiones magistrales y plenarias, mesas redondas, encuentros con expertos, comunicaciones libres y presentaciones de carteles, llegó la sesión de clausura para la enfermería. El Dr. Karadağ y el EB de la Asociación Turca de WOC entregaron a la Dra. Elizabeth A Ayello el Premio a la Trayectoria; al Dr. Dimitri Beeckman, el Premio al Servicio al Cuidado de la Piel, y a Susan Stelton, por su contribución al desarrollo de la WOC en Turquía. También fueron galardonados Laurent Chabal, por el WCET®, y Gabriele Kroboth, por el ECET.

Invitacion para hablar en la universidad Koc
La decana Ayise Karadag, de la Escuela de Enfermería de la Universidad Koc de Estambul (Turquía), me invitó a impartir un seminario sobre "Escribir para publicar" a los estudiantes de doctorado y al profesorado el martes 24 de octubre de 2022, antes del 31º Congreso Bienal Conjunto de Enfermería de ISUCRS. La mayoría de nuestros miembros del WCET® me conocen porque fui editor ejecutivo voluntario de la Revista WCET® entre 2004 y 2014. Como especialista en enfermería clínica con un trabajo a tiempo completo en un importante hospital de Nueva York, empecé a trabajar a tiempo parcial como ayudante del editor de la revista Decubitus en 1989. Al cambiar el nombre de la revista, también cambió mi posición. La revista se llama ahora Avances en el cuidado de la piel y las heridas y tengo el honor de ser coeditor jefe junto con el Dr. R Gary Sibbald, dermatólogo de Toronto, Canadá.
Este seminario práctico constaba de dos partes. La primera fue una presentación didáctica titulada "Consejos para escribir y publicar". Los objetivos de esta primera parte del seminario eran: 1. 1. Identificar los pasos del proceso editorial desde la concepción del manuscrito, la redacción, la presentación de la publicación y la decisión de publicación en la revista; y 2 Revisar los requisitos comunes de las directrices para autores de manuscritos para escribir en el estilo apropiado de la revista. Los participantes pudieron asistir en persona o virtualmente; la respuesta que recibí fue que disfrutaron del formato relajado e interactivo que les permitió aprender y adquirir nuevos conocimientos sobre la edición.
De los principales puntos tratados, la primera decisión importante es ¿quién quieres que lea tu artículo? Eso le orientará sobre la revista a la que debe pensar en adaptar el estilo y el formato de su manuscrito. Es esencial seguir las directrices para autores de la revista específica a la que vaya a enviar su manuscrito.
Debatimos mucho sobre cómo escribir y algunas de las dificultades que puede plantear la escritura en inglés. Me encantó escuchar todos los comentarios y preguntas; también hablamos de sus ideas para la tesis doctoral. Los estudiantes y el profesorado de la Escuela de Enfermería de la Universidad Koc participan muy activamente en numerosos estudios por los que merecen ser comentados. Y lo que es más importante, presentan sus investigaciones para su publicación en diversas revistas.
La segunda parte del seminario estuvo abierta únicamente a los asistentes presenciales. El Decano preseleccionó algunos manuscritos para que yo los revisara y utilizara como ilustración de los principios tratados en la primera parte. Hice hincapié en que un estudiante no puede limitarse a tomar un trabajo, una tesis o incluso su tesis doctoral y presentarla en una revista como escrita para la escuela. Escribir para una revista es diferente. Se debatieron varios ejemplos de claridad de ideas, estructura de las frases y cómo responder a los comentarios de los revisores.
Después, visité los laboratorios de simulación y revisé algunas cintas de los exámenes de evaluación de competencias que deben hacer los estudiantes. Sus laboratorios y sus listas y procesos de comprobación de competencias eran impresionantes.
Basándome en mis interacciones con los estudiantes, el personal y el profesorado, esta es una Escuela de Enfermería extraordinaria. Se trata de una Escuela de Enfermería que orienta a sus estudiantes y profesores y que apoya enormemente estos esfuerzos profesionales de creación de evidencias en las que basar la práctica, así como la difusión de los resultados.
A título personal, quiero dar las gracias a todos ellos -alumnos, personal y profesores-, que sacaron tiempo de sus apretadas agendas laborales y escolares, por su amabilidad y por la maravillosa forma en que me atendieron. Estoy deseando conocer sus publicaciones, investigaciones y tesis doctorales. Muchas gracias por esta gran oportunidad que ha sido tan enriquecedora profesionalmente y divertida para mí. Estoy deseando conocer sus logros. Esperamos verle de nuevo en el Congreso: envíe sus resúmenes, por favor.
