This is a time to celebrate! In May, we celebrated the 45th anniversary of the WCET® and International Nurses Day (May 12th), and on the 26th of June we celebrate the birthday of Norma N Gill, our pioneer. Norma was not only our first WCET® President but also the first WCET® Journal Editor. Therefore, it is the perfect time to focus our joint message on the WCET® Journal, our Journal Editor, our Journal Editor Emeritus, all Editorial Board members, our Publisher, Cambridge Media, and of course our community of peer review experts.
We thank you all for a job well done, for your comments and for your ongoing support of authors in the process of allowing a manuscript to finally become a relevant published article. Having a diverse group of peer reviewers from different countries, professions and practice settings enriches the feed-back and increases the quality of the publication. To echo Aristotle, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”.
The high quality of articles published facilitates clinicians to learn, adapt and transfer this knowledge and experience into practice, so improving patient care and outcomes.
Many thanks to our Journal Editor, Dr Jenny Prentice, who has the difficult task of gathering all the comments from peer reviewers, compiling them into constructive feedback for authors, in a way that encourages them to consider the feedback to improve their submission. This is not an easy job as each author behind each manuscript has their own background, opinion, expectation, and desire to be published.
We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dr Elizabeth A Ayello, WCET® Immediate Past President and WCET® Journal Editor Emeritus, for being awarded the 2023 Margaret Comerford Freda Award for Editorial Leadership in Nursing. This award comes from the International Academy of Nursing Editors (INANE, https://nursingeditors.com), the award ceremony will be in August in Dublin, Ireland. We are very proud of our past President Dr Elizabeth A Ayello and feel very lucky to have benefited from her many years of editorial, knowledge, skill and experience. We are sure it will not be the last recognition Elizabeth will receive.
I (Laurent) have been a peer reviewer for more than 3 years now. I love to blind review the work of others, to read their research question, the methodology and the outcomes. It has allowed me to read, without bias as an outsider, to put forward my own personal perspective, to point out some relevant considerations or to comment, to do my best to help the author improve the quality of the paper before publication. I also learn a great deal as the authors bring new content or perspective and novel ways to deal with situations, sometimes challenging the way I think and inviting me to move from my comfort zone and make changes in practice.
As a peer reviewer you do not see other peer reviewers’ comments on a manuscript unless you are asked to peer review the same manuscript again after changes have been made. This can also be very educational.
As readers, we only see the result of this hidden work, which takes time to achieve.
So, we take this opportunity to thank all of you who have provided manuscripts, or who are considering doing so, we need you to keep us up-to-date and knowledgeable from a global perspective. According to our members the WCET® Journal is one of the top membership benefits appreciated by all. The survival and quality of the WCET® Journal relies on you, we look forward to receiving your scientific endeavours.
As authors, when submitting a manuscript, we are always anxious about how long it will take to get published, or even if it will be accepted or rejected. To have an article published as quickly as possible it is important to make yourself aware of the WCET® Journals Author Guidelines before commencing your article as different journals have different guidelines. Before submitting your article for publication, check that the author guidelines have been adhered to. This is particularly important for formatting of references and sending of digital images. Further, to promptly provide answers to reviewer’s questions and feedback. Having your article or scientific work peer reviewed, validated by your peers and published is a wonderful and gratifying feeling and is crucial to improving knowledge and awareness.
Over these last months we have been invited to review and comment on different articles from different journals, to make recommendations for books or glossary of terms, such as:
- The Nurses Specialised in Wounds, Ostomy and Continence Canada (NSWOCC) Canadian Urinary Diversion Position Statement, done in collaboration with the Canadian Urological Association: https://www.nswoc.ca/_files/ugd/9d080f_1d03fe28d 93743ac9af21e2f0c89d186.pdf.
- The NSWOCC Parastomal Hernia Prevention, Assessment, and Management: Canadian Best Practice Recommendations.
- The Best Practice in Wound Care : from Novice to Expert (“Pratiques exemplaires en soins des plaies : de novice à expert»), divided in 2 volumes, published at the Laval University Press (“Presse de l’Université de Laval”). A reference for the French speaking healthcare professionals.
- The World Union of Wound Healing Societies (WUWHS) International Wound Care Glossary for the International Council for the Harmonisation of Wound Care Terminology (ICHWCT).
- The peristomal care chapter for an update of the Wound Care book (“Le précis des plaies”) from the Swiss Association for Woundcare (SAfW) – Romande (French speaking) section.
We also want to take the opportunity to warmly thank our colleagues, Maddie White and Angie Perrin (Eds) and all ASCN UK contributors, for their book: “Stoma Care Specialist Nursing: a guide for Clinical Practice”. Springer Publication.
On behalf of our patients and nursing community we congratulate you and thank you for the hard work done, for your contributions and recommendations and for the speedy implementation of current evidence into best nursing practice. In addition, for helping foster common language usage in wound skin ostomy and continence care globally.

Revisión inter pares: un viaje en el que todos salen ganando

¡Este es un momento para celebrar! En mayo celebramos el 45 aniversario del WCET® y el Día Internacional de la Enfermería (12 de mayo); y el 26 de junio celebramos el cumpleaños de Norma N Gill, nuestra pionera. Norma no sólo fue nuestra primera presidenta del WCET®, sino también la primera editora de la Revista WCET®. Por lo tanto, es el momento perfecto para centrar nuestro mensaje común en la Revista WCET®, nuestro Editor de la Revista, nuestro Editor Emérito de la Revista, todos los miembros del Consejo Editorial, nuestro Editor, Cambridge Media y, por supuesto, nuestra comunidad de expertos de revisión inter pares.
Les damos las gracias a todos por un trabajo bien hecho, por sus comentarios y por su continuo apoyo a los autores en el proceso que permite que un manuscrito se convierta finalmente en un relevante artículo publicado. Contar con un grupo diverso de revisión inter pares de diferentes países, profesiones y entornos de práctica enriquece la retroalimentación y aumenta la calidad de la publicación. Como Aristóteles, “el todo es mayor que la suma de las partes”.
La alta calidad de los artículos publicados facilita a los clínicos el aprendizaje, la adaptación y la transferencia de estos conocimientos y experiencias a la práctica, mejorando así la atención y los resultados de los pacientes.
Muchas gracias a la editora de la revista, la Dra. Jenny Prentice, que tiene la difícil tarea de recopilar todos los comentarios de los revisores inter pares y convertirlos en comentarios constructivos para los autores, de forma que les anime a tenerlos en cuenta para mejorar su presentación. No es un trabajo fácil, ya que cada autor detrás de cada manuscrito tiene sus propios antecedentes, opiniones, expectativas y deseos de ser publicado.
Nos gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para felicitar a la Dra. Elizabeth A. Ayello, Presidenta anterior de WCET® y Editora Emérita de la Revista WCET®, por haber sido galardonada con el Premio Margaret Comerford Freda 2023 al Liderazgo Editorial en Enfermería. Este premio procede de la Academia Internacional de Editores de Enfermería (INANE, https://nursingeditors.com), la ceremonia de entrega será en agosto en Dublín, Irlanda. Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestra anterior Presidenta, la Dra. Elizabeth A Ayello, y nos sentimos muy afortunados de habernos beneficiado de sus muchos años de redacción, conocimientos, habilidad y experiencia. Estamos seguros de que no será el último reconocimiento que reciba Elizabeth.
Yo (Laurent) soy revisor inter pares desde hace más de 3 años. Me encanta revisar a ciegas el trabajo de otros, leer su pregunta de investigación, la metodología y los resultados. Como persona ajena, me ha permitido leer sin prejuicios, exponer mi perspectiva personal, señalar algunas consideraciones pertinentes o hacer comentarios y hacer todo lo posible para ayudar al autor a mejorar la calidad del artículo antes de su publicación. También aprendo mucho, ya que los autores aportan nuevos contenidos o perspectivas y formas novedosas de afrontar las situaciones, desafiando a veces mi forma de pensar e invitándome a salir de mi zona de confort y a introducir cambios en la práctica.
Como revisor inter pares, usted no ve los comentarios de otros revisores inter pares sobre un manuscrito a menos que se le pida que vuelva a revisarlo después de que se hayan realizado cambios. Esto también puede ser muy educativo.
Como lectores, sólo vemos el resultado de este trabajo oculto, que lleva tiempo conseguir.
Así pues, aprovechamos esta oportunidad para dar las gracias a todos los que han aportado manuscritos, o a los que están pensando en hacerlo, necesitamos que nos mantengan al día y bien informados desde una perspectiva global. Según nuestros miembros, la Revista WCET® es una de las principales ventajas que todos aprecian. La supervivencia y la calidad de la Revista WCET® dependen de usted, esperamos recibir sus trabajos científicos.
Como autores, al presentar un manuscrito siempre nos inquieta saber cuánto tardará en publicarse, o incluso si será aceptado o rechazado. Para que un artículo se publique lo antes posible, es importante que conozca las directrices para autores de las Revista WCET® antes de empezar a escribirlo, ya que cada revista tiene sus propias directrices. Antes de enviar su artículo para publicación, compruebe que se han respetado las directrices para autores. Esto es especialmente importante para el formato de las referencias y el envío de imágenes digitales. Además, responder con prontitud a las preguntas y comentarios de los revisores. Que su artículo o trabajo científico sea revisado por expertos inter pares, validado por sus colegas y publicado es una sensación maravillosa y gratificante, y resulta crucial para mejorar el conocimiento y la concienciación.
A lo largo de estos últimos meses se nos ha invitado a revisar y comentar diferentes artículos de distintas revistas, a hacer recomendaciones de libros o glosarios de términos, como por ejemplo:
- Declaración de la posición de las enfermeras especializadas en heridas, ostomía y continencia canadienses (NSWOCC) sobre la desviación urinaria, realizada en colaboración con la Asociación Urológica Canadiense: https://www.nswoc.ca/_files/ugd/9d080f_1d03fe28d 93743ac9af21e2f0c89d186.pdf.
- Prevención, evaluación y tratamiento de la hernia paraestomal de NSWOCC: Recomendaciones canadienses sobre buenas prácticas.
- Las mejores prácticas en el cuidado de heridas: de novato a experto (“Pratiques exemplaires en soins des plaies : de novice à expert”), dividido en 2 volúmenes, publicado en la editorial de la Universidad Laval (“Presse de l’Université de Laval”). Una referencia para los profesionales sanitarios francófonos.
- Glosario internacional sobre el cuidado de heridas de la Unión Mundial de Sociedades de Cuidado de las Heridas (WUWHS) para el Consejo Internacional para la Armonización de la Terminología sobre el Cuidado de Heridas (ICHWCT).
- El capítulo de cuidados periestomales para una actualización del libro de cuidados de heridas (“Le précis des plaies”) de la Asociación Suiza de Cuidados de Heridas (SAfW) – sección Romande (francófona).
También queremos aprovechar la oportunidad para agradecer calurosamente a nuestras colegas, Maddie White y Angie Perrin (Eds) y a todos los colaboradores de ASCN UK, por su libro: “Enfermería especializada en estomaterapia: guía para la práctica clínica”. Publicación de Springer.
