Background Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are chronic wounds occurring in people with venous insufficiency, causing significant burden. The last clinical guideline providing recommendations on the prevention and management of VLUs in the Pan-Pacific was published in 2011.

Method A stakeholder survey was undertaken to collect perspectives from health professionals, industry representatives, patients and caregivers. The survey was designed with consideration to guideline development methods. It was developed in consultation with a patient representative and reviewed by a Māori consultation group. The survey was based on an audit of content in the 2011 VLU guideline and collected opinions on topics of priority to include in a guideline and clinical outcomes of importance to evaluating interventions for VLUs. Recruitment was through promotion by the sponsoring wound organisations. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.

Results A total of 271 people, including 19 patients and three caregivers, responded. Almost all the 35 topics were rated as high priority to include in a guideline. Almost all the 60 clinical outcomes were rated as critically important to evaluating VLU interventions.

Conclusion Results indicated that respondents have a high need for information about VLUs. The results will inform the development of an upcoming VLU guideline for the Pan-Pacific region.

This article describes the pathway used to re-imagine the design of both the wound dressing trolley (WDT) and one key component of a commercially available disposable wound dressing pack used in healthcare settings. A chance observation of equipment led to the development of WDT specifications using the plan-do-study-act (PDSA) quality improvement cycle. This included auditing all ward and clinic WDTs, excluding the operating room, and carrying out consultations with experienced co-workers. The subsequent redesign and specifications for the WDT coincided with an opportunity to remedy a long-standing oversight of the size of a wound dressing pack sterile field. The two issues are inter-connected and presented an opportunity for practical solutions and outcomes in a mid-sized acute health facility and across all health settings.

Background Healthcare organisations provide policies and guidelines to direct the nursing staff’s decision-making surrounding care in patients with surgical wounds to reflect the best current evidence. Nonetheless, nurses face multiple challenges in providing evidence-based care (EBC), leading to inconsistent surgical wound care. In addition, the reduction of the use of laparotomy procedures in elective practice has led to a potential decrease in competence and experience in its treatment regime, particularly related to wound management.

Study objective This is a protocol for a scoping review that will systematically search and synthesise available data on barriers and enablers to EBC for patients with laparotomy wounds reported by nurses in acute care settings. We will focus on the reported barriers and enablers related to wound assessment, wound products, dressing application, infection control techniques, documentation, holistic care and escalation of care.

Methods and analysis The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist and explanation documents will guide the review protocol. The methodology framework formulated by Arksey and O’Malley¹, revised by Levac et al² and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)³, will be utilised to structure the scoping review. Qualitative themes will be aligned with the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF)⁴.

Background Venous leg ulcers (VLU) are an important public health issue, impacting individuals’ lives and representing a societal economic burden. Compression therapy is considered the best treatment for VLU, but there is no conclusive evidence whether the health benefits outweigh the costs.

Objectives To identify and describe economic evaluations relating to compression therapy for the treatment of VLU and to evaluate the quality of these studies.

Method We will conduct a systematic review of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central, CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science and LILACS databases and Google Scholar. We will include randomised controlled trials, pragmatic clinical trials, cohort studies, case-control studies and quasi-experimental studies which also describe an economic evaluation of compression therapy for VLU, published in English, Portuguese or Spanish. No time restriction will be applied. The screening and assessment will be done by two independent reviewers, supported by Covidence Software. ROB-2 and ROBINS-I tools will be used to assess risk of bias, and the CHEERS tool will support the assessment of the quality of economic evaluations.

Discussion This systematic review will contribute to expand the knowledge about the topic. In addition, it may support health professionals’ clinic decision making, assist managers regarding the allocation of resources, and improve the quality of life of individuals with VLU.

Iatrogenic hypospadias is a common cause of iatrogenic complications in the elderly male patient with a long-term urethral catheter (IDC) device; however, there is limited research to support its prevalence. This complication is not widely recognised or documented, and the risk is not discussed with the family or patient prior to IDC insertion. There is also minimal research and evidence on the prevention of iatrongenic hypospadias, therefore further research will benefit the nursing care of these patients.
