Background Pressure injuries (PIs) are a significant healthcare burden and an international safety and quality care issue. Managing and preventing PIs in high body mass index (BMI) patients (those with a BMI of 30 or higher) requires a multifactorial approach and additional resources.

Aim This review will systematically search and synthesise available evidence of hospital-acquired pressure injury (HAPI) in patients with a high BMI, and map current best prevention practices and nurses’ experiences.

Methods and analysis The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist (PRISMA-ScR) will be used to guide this review. Literature in English from 2009 to May 2021 will be searched from databases including Ovid MEDLINE, EBSCO CINAHL Plus, JBI Evidence Synthesis, Scopus and Embase, as well as clinical registries, with qualitative and quantitative studies sourced. Data analysis will involve a numerical summary and thematic analysis. Findings will be presented through themes, tables and/or diagrams, with a descriptive format for qualitative studies.

Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval is not required as data will be sourced from publicly available materials. Findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed journal, conferences and social media. Consultation will be undertaken with patients and health professionals.

Background Wound assessment is an integral component of wound management that improves patient wound healing outcomes.

Aim This study aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge, attitude and competence in wound assessment in Nigeria.

Methods This descriptive, cross-sectional study utilised a structured questionnaire based on relevant literature and wound assessment guidelines for data collection.

Results A total of 182 registered nurses participated in the study. Nearly 75% of the participants had diploma nursing education but had not attended any post-nursing training wound care program. More than half of the nurses demonstrated a high level of knowledge (n=96, 52.7%) in wound assessment overall, except in wound aetiology, wound size measurement, undermining and wound bed tissues. Also, 51.1% of the nurses had a positive attitude (n=93) and low competence (n=171, 94%) in wound assessment. Wound assessment was mostly perceived as physicians’ responsibility and not that of nurses. There was no significant association between nurses’ competence and knowledge (χ²=0.24, p=0.81) and their attitude to wound assessment (χ²=0.15, p=0.73).

Conclusion Many of the nurses lacked competence in wound assessment and demonstrated a deficiency in their knowledge and attitude, thus suggesting the need for in-service education of nurses on wound assessment procedures and regular updates of nurses’ knowledge, skill and competence in Nigeria.

Background Toe systolic pressures (TSP) are an essential part of a lower limb wound assessment. They assist wound clinicians ascribe aetiology, and predict wound healing capacity, assisting with triage and ongoing care planning.

TSP method The toe cuff should be placed around the base of the hallux securely. The photoplethysmography (PPG) probe should be placed on the distal pulp of the hallux so that the probe is flush with the skin surface, affixed with tape. Wait for a strong cyclical signal from the probe to appear on the Doppler screen. Next, inflate the cuff, taking care not to overinflate. Once a flat line with the PPG signal is obtained on the screen, inflate a further 20mmHg. Then, slowly deflate the cuff at a rate of 2–5mmHg per second. The first regular cyclical waveform on the screen is the point at which the pressure in the artery is greater than the pressure in the cuff, and is considered the TSP.

Discussion TSP are a valuable measure to include in wound practice. TSP are an important part of wound staging systems, can predict wound healing capacity and help guide ongoing management.

Introduction Chemical burns are the result of exposure to a variety of substances commonly found in the home, workplace and surrounding environment.

Material and method Between January 2016 and December 2019, patients who were followed up for chemical burns in the burn centre of Diyarbakır Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital were examined. In this study, we collected medical records, demographic information, cause of injury and related factors, hospital treatment and demographic data (e.g. age, sex, location, application date and discharge date).

Results The number of patients hospitalised for chemical burns was 23, of which 18 (78.3%) were males and 5 (21.7%) were females. The most frequently affected body areas were the upper extremities, and two patients had conjunctivitis in the eyes after chemical burns. Mean total body surface area 5.13±2.71 (min: 1, max: 10). Chemical burns occurred as work-related accidents in five patients. The remaining 18 chemical injuries were accidental and at home. Acid and base chemical burns were seen in equal numbers. Chemical burns were most common in spring and summer.

Conclusion Chemicals in the household should be stored in safe, well-ventilated areas and should be kept out of the reach of everyone.

Patient and public engagement (PPE) in research is increasingly being mandated by research funding bodies and policy makers. PPE is an approach where research is conducted with or by patients or the public, making them part of the research team. In this review article we summarise benefits of PPE, the state of patient engagement in wound care, current gaps in PPE in wounds research, and challenges surrounding PPE partnerships. Finally, we provide an example of how to prepare for a research project with PPE. In this example we demonstrate how frameworks can guide development of strategies to build good partnerships with patient and/or members of the public as co-researchers.

Aim To describe and compare patients’ and nurses’ perceptions of the feasibility and acceptability of a patient education pressure injury prevention (PIP) care bundle (PPIPCB).

Methods Semi-structured patient interviews and nurse focus groups were conducted in three medical units of an Australian metropolitan hospital. Qualitative data were gathered on participants’ experiences of PIP education on hospital admission and their views of the acceptability of implementing a PPIPCB. Following inductive content analysis of the data, the categories were comparatively analysed and the themes defined.

Results Patients reported receiving limited education from nurses, while heavy workloads were a major barrier to nurses delivering patient education. Patients and nurses valued PIP education and wanted more time and resources to engage in this activity. The PPIPCB was viewed by both patients and nurses as a useful resource that could facilitate information sharing between nurses, patients and their families.

Conclusion Nurses have a key role in educating patients about PIP care, with accessible resources needed to facilitate this activity. Our PPIPCB provides patients and nurses with simple to implement strategies that could increase patients’ participation in their care.

Background Preservation and restoration of skin integrity following surgery is paramount for optimal patient wound healing outcomes. Acute wounds such as incisional wounds, skin tears, trauma or burn injury cause pain, reduce quality of life and are a considerable economic burden to the Australian healthcare system. Despite considerable advances in surgical technique and even with a panacea of innovative novel wound dressings, our scientific and clinical understanding of wound healing prevention and management of acute wound complications continue to present a considerable challenge to clinicians and policy makers. Understanding the gaps in knowledge and identifying clinical practice deficits are key for prevention and management of acute wounds.

Aims This scoping review aims to (i) map current research evidence and outcomes in acute wounds management, (ii) map current research evidence and outcomes in acute wounds prevention and (iii) determine research gaps in acute wound research relevant to Australia.

Methods The framework for this scoping review will utilise the PRISMA-ScR framework developed by Tricco et al.¹. We will search the following databases – Medline, CINAHL, Embase, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Cochrane Library and PubMed from January 2010 to March 2021. Trial registries (e.g. ISRCTN, ANZCTR and clinicaltrials.gov) and websites and publications of professional associations for wound care will also be searched. Two reviewers will independently screen all titles, abstracts and full text for articles to include. Conflicts will be solved by a third reviewer. This scoping review will include both qualitative and quantitative studies on acute wounds conducted in Australia. We will extract data from eligible articles and results will be grouped according to area of research and synthesised in a narrative review.

Ethics and dissemination As we will use data (i.e., journal articles) from publicly available platforms this scoping review does not require ethical approval. Findings will be disseminated through a peer-reviewed journal and conference presentation and social media platforms.
